Miley Cyrus might claim she has never “felt so happy” but according to experts the former Disney star's recent behaviour is causing concern that the 19 year-old is on a similar downward spiral to fellow child star Britney Spears.
The 'Toxic' singer's squeaky clean image cracked when she was in her early twenties and after heavy partying, rumours of drug abuse and erratic behaviour was eventually sectioned by her father, who still has primary control over her estate.
Miley, who is currently taking a break from the spotlight, allegedly has been acting out in a similar “wannabe wild girl” way. As well as losing dramatic amounts of weight and rumours of self-harming over the last few months, she revealed a dramatic new blonde cropped hairstyle over the weekend.
Referring to the haircut she tweeted: "Never felt more me in my whole life" and was "feeling so happy in my skin."
But the new look soon turned into a matter of contention, after fans attacked her haircut on Twitter the star came back with a slew of comments about how "opinions are like a**holes" and "self-love is the greatest of all flatterers."
In March pictures emerged on Celeb Dirty Laundry, circling her wrists where there were definitely marks leading to speculation that Miley had been self-harming.
In April a tweet talking about scars fueled speculation that she had been cutting herself. She wrote: "Scars remind us of where we've been. Not where we're going."
Judging by her headline grabbing antics, Los Angeles-based psychologist Dr. Seth Meyers believes, “Miley Cyrus seems stuck in a set of compulsive behaviours that cry out for attention."
Meyers told RadarOnline: "[Her] parade of unusual and provocative behaviour recently reminds me of Britney Spears' downward spiral in the past.”
In a similar vein, Britney shaved her head during her downfall from teen idol. Speaking of her erratic behaviour, Meyers said: "The apparent recent marks on her wrist, the drastic haircut, and an undeniably fledgling career suggest to me that Miley is overwhelmed with anxiety, feeling lost and uncertain about her future.”
“Her loved ones should keep a close eye on her in case her impulsive behaviour continues and gets worse, potentially putting her at risk of self-harm.”
Like Britney, Miley is also set to marry young, though her fiancé Liam Hemsworth seems more grounded than, the whirlwind marriage between Spears and back-up dancer Kevin Federline. With her career stalling and little to fill her days, is Miley heading for a meltdown? Should her fans be worried?
If she is just exploring her on personality and expressing herself in new ways, as many teenagers do, is she really ready to settle down and marry? Can she really make a lifetime commitment while still discovering 'who' she is?
