The Dark Knight Rises shooter, James Holmes has officially been charged today with 142 counts including first degree murder following his horrifying massacre in Aurora, Colorado. Holmes was charged with 24 counts of first degree murder, two counts for each of the lives he claimed on July 20.

The 24-year old was also charged with 116 counts of attempted murder, two counts for every one of the 58 people who were injured in the shooting, and counts of unlawful use of a deadly weapon and possession of an explosive device.

Holmes, who was still sporting reddish-orange hair, was heard for the first time when a judge asked him if he was fine with his lawyers requesting more time before entering his plea to which he replied he was.

By charging him with two different counts this gives prosecutors a choice of whether to argue that the murders were premeditated or if Holmes acted with "extreme indifference to the value of human life."

Prosecutors have not yet decided if they will seek the death penalty, an option in the State of Colorado. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 9th.
