Olympic hopeful and Team GB poster boy Tom Daley made his début at the London Olympic Games today and as he took to the diving board for the synchronised 10m platform final with partner Pete Waterfield at the Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park in Stratford.
Before heading to the pool Tom took to Twitter to thank fans for the support he had received: "After the toughest year of my life, today is the day! I just want to thank everyone for all their support no matter what the outcome x"
But it was not to be the fairytale ending as despite taking the lead from the Chinese pair, a mistake in the fourth round meant that the British team dropped down the table and despite a valiant fight back finished a frustrating fourth.
Soon after he took to Twitter, writing: "#gutted so sorry everyone but we tried our best and you can't afford to miss a dive at this standard...bring on individual"
Rumoured girlfriend, US diver Kassidy Cook soon tweeted her support for the youngster, sating: "@TomDaley1994 don't worry, you'll get them in individuals! Miss you!"
Though the pair have not yet confirmed they are dating Tom's friend and fellow diver Tonia Couch told the Daily Star that they are 'smitten' with each other.
The 18 year-old, who stole the hearts of the nation when he competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and became the second youngest ever British Olympian is set to take centre stage at the home games with hopes now pinned on an individual medal.
With rippling muscles and a deep tan, the teenager has not only matured into a talented diver but the girls have started to take notice with Daley becoming something of a teen idol.
Speaking to Now magazine earlier this year the Plymouth born star admitted that after ten years of diving the female attention is something of a shock: “It's one of those things you get used to but it's really weird!
“I was out shopping recently and some girls ran up to me and just screamed in my face. It was an awkward moment.”
He might be still a teenager but being an athlete at the top of their game is hardwork, with Tom revealing his strict regime.
“The training's pretty intense,” he explained, “five hours a day in both the pool and the gym - but it's worth it. I'm still quite young but divers tend to peak around the age of 24.”
But Tom has no plans to give up and with two Olympics under his belt he already has his eyes on the next few.
“I'd like to compete in at least five Olympic games,” he said. “I've been diving for 10 years now and I still love it. “If I ever come to the point when I'm not enjoying it or it becomes a bit of a chore, then I'll stop doing it. It's tiring and some days it's tough but I still enjoy it."
We think Tom did us proud whether he got the gold or not!
