M.C. Hammer has revealed he could have married Whitney Houston when the stars were both younger.

The 50-year-old singer says Whitney's father John was keen for the pair to tie the knot after they began hanging out in the same music circles.

In an interview with Mixx, Hammer admits that Whitney's father approached him about dating his daughter while they were bith attending the Super Bowl XXV in 1991.

"Whitney's dad pulled me and Whitney in a room and said, 'You know Hammer, you should really consider marrying Whitney.' And, I said, 'I'd love to but I'm already married,'" Hammer said.

"I love my wife dearly but, I always laughed about that. Always a big fan of Whitney. I loved Whitney and miss her dearly."

Meanwhile, stars paid tribute to Whitney Houston at this month's BET Awards in Los Angeles.

Monica took the stage to perform 'I Love The Lord', which was followed by Brandy with a performance of 'I'm Your Baby Tonight' and 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'.

Houston's brother Gary also joined the singer's onstage, saying he missed Whitney "so much" and adding: "I love you back to life every day."

He sang 'Where You Are' before bringing his mother Cissy to the stage, where she performed an rendition of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' .
