It would seem that 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is prophetically-titled, overnight box office reports suggest.

The film, which debuted yesterday (July 3), has broken the record for the best Tuesday opening in US history, according to official data.

It raked in $35 million yesterday alone; enough to eclipse previous record-holder 'Transformers', which raked in $27.8 million on its Tuesday debut in 2007.

The figure is marginally less than the $39.4 million earned on the first day by Sam Raimi's 'Spiderman' on its opening day - Friday, May 3 - in 2002, and also behind the $40.4 achieved by 'Spiderman 2' on Wednesday, June 30, 2004.

'Spiderman 3' took a gargantuan $59.8 million on Friday, May 4, 2007 - but we think $35m for a Tuesday is still an incredible figure for the new reincarnation, which stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Its UK numbers are yet to surface.
