While Tom Cruise claimed only last month that his happiest time was being with Katie Holmes, it seems his wife of five years didn’t agree and has reportedly been planning to divorce the star for some time.
The actress, who filed for divorce in New York on Friday (June 30) after five years of marriage has allegedly been taking steps to ensure that she is awarded soul custody of her six year-old daughter Suri and had even rented a secret apartment in the city away from her home with Tom according to US Weekly.
Despite getting ready to divorce the Hollywood legend Katie seemed happier than she had in years last week with a source telling US Weekly that for the last few weeks the Dawson’s Creek star has been “happy” and seemed like she had been “set free.”
"She's been miserable for a long time, but the last couple of weeks, she's been happy -- like she's been set free," a source told the magazine.
"I was wondering what changed with her, I guess she can finally be happy again,” the source added.
While the 33 year-old has been planning the split, her husband who is currently filming new movie ‘Oblivion’ in Iceland is said to have been “blindsided’ by the divorce.
Tom told Playboy magazine last month: "She is an extraordinary person ... She's funny and charming and when she walks into the room, I just feel better ... What we have is very special."
Though neither star have commented publicly, they have both made official statements.
"Tom was deeply saddened and was concentrating on his three children," a spokesman for the star claimed on Friday.
While Katie's Lawyer claimed her main priority was that of her daughter, Suri.
"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest. This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes' lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe, said in a statement.
