Over a month since it came out in America 'The Avengers' shows no apparent signs of slowing its smashing of box office records.

Having taken $600m in the USA it is now the highest grossing superhero movie ever, and with $1.4bn taken worldwide it is behind only 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' in the all time list of highest grossing movies.

That makes it the highest grossing movie not by someone called 'James Cameron' ever, though it still has some way to go to match 'Titanic' on $2.1bn, and must effectively double its takings to top Cameron's Smurfs meets Pocahontas epic 'Avatar'.

Yet it has already smashed various records: The biggest opening ever, with  $207.4 million on its opening weekend. Fastest movie ever to make $200 million (2 days), $300 million (9 days), $400 million (14 days), and $500 million (23 days).

A sequel is unsurprisingly in the works, while the various superheroes will also return in their own franchises, with Thor 2 and Ironman 3 on their way.
