The first picture of Angelina Jolie as 'Disney's most beloved villain' Maleficent has been released, and just casting our eyes on the snap gives us a chill.
After official production started on the movie earlier this week, Tuesday (June 19), Disney premiered the first look at the Oscar-winning actress as the nemesis of Sleeping Beauty.
The release date isn't until March 2014 (a long time, we know), but we can't wait for the movie that will tell “the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.”
'Maleficent' was first announced in January 2010, with Tim Burton as its director, but now Angelina has been pictured on set in full costume – complete with her horns – so we're getting excited.
Talking about the new movie in July 2010, Angelina told MTV News: "I would love to [make 'Maleficent']. It's all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl, she was my favourite. And Tim [Burton]... the chance to work with him would just be extraordinary."
Tim Burton has now been replaced by 'Alice in Wonderland' production designer Robert Stromberg, and we can't deny that Maleficent has had an almost Lady Gaga-esque makeover, with the prosthetic cheekbones
Of the costumes, Angelina revealed that they were playing around with the designs and updating from the 1959 Disney movie.
“We’re experimenting with different things. But the horns are the horns — you can’t deny them. You have to have horns.”
Elle Fanning will play the role of Aurora in the modern re-telling of the story, but Angelina insists that the new movie is not anti-princess.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: “It’s not anti-princess, but it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman. I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.
"It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.”
Excited? We are.
