Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney is big pals with Caroline Flack, and she couldn't believe the bullying that the Xtra Factor star suffered after she started dating One Direction star Harry Styles.
The 32-year-old received criticism from all ages, not just hardcore Directioners for her relationship with the then 17-year-old because of the significant age-gap but the abuse caused Gemma to be left open-mouthed with shock.
Talking to Now magazine, about the backlash and even death threats, the 27-year-old radio DJ said: “My jaw dropped for most of the time. I just couldn't believe that someone could be so vilified.”
She also added: “It was a very intense period of time but I think it's over and, at the end of the day, Caroline is just a person.”
It wasn't just Caroline's age that was the problem for people Gemma seemed to say, as it was her celebrity status and good looks that may have made her seem more detached.
“I think people feel removed when they see someone on the telly and in magazines and, obviously, she's pretty gorgeous as well, so I think some people see her as a fictional character,” she explained.
“But she's just a young woman with emotions and is clever, funny and really amazing at her job.”
