Doctor Who head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat revealed to fans last weekend that another spinoff from the hit sci-fi drama is unlikely to happen. Speaking at the Doctor Who convention in Cardiff, the showrunner announced that any kind of Doctor Who spinoff programme is unlikely to materialise in the near future.

Steven confessed: "I'm not against it. Spinoff shows happen because you think 'That is so good, you should spin it off' - but personally I'm relatively busy."

However executive producer Caroline Skinner was quick to assure fans that this may change in the future and added: "[But] you never know."

Fans have been clamouring for a Doctor Who spinoff since the popular Torchwood finished last year, after airing on the BBC from 2006 to 2011.

The first three series of Torchwood were produced by the BBC, with the fourth season Miracle Day co-produced with US cable network Starz, but star John Barrowman who played Captain Jack Harkness on the show recently suggested that Torchwood is "in limbo".

A second spinoff of Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures, aired on CBBC and ran for five series between 2007 and 2011, but ended following the death of lead actress Elisabeth Sladen.

However fans of the franchise can take some comfort in knowing that Doctor Who will return to BBC One in the autumn, and in the meantime you can check out the newly released teaser trailer featuring the Doctor and his companions Amy and Rory in the wild west.
