Billy Crystal might have hosted that Academy Awards for the ninth time but the comedian didn't go down well last night, which led to 'Who is Billy Crystal' trending worldwide.
The actor took to the stage for the 84 Academy Awards, and before the show, he tweeted: "Opening number changed. War Horse broke his leg, had to put him down."
Deadline Hollywood founder Nikki Finke blogged throughout the show, and wrote that his tweet was a "funnier line than anything onstage now".
In a night that saw Octavia Spencer collect an award for best supporting actress, for her role in 'The Help', he joked: "After I saw The Help I just wanted to hug the first black woman I saw, which from Beverly Hills is about a 45 minute drive."
Viewers dubbed the night, that saw 'The Artist' collect five awards, as the most ceremony ever and Crystal didn't help, because he was slammed for showing his age with his outdated jokes.
"The whole introductory sequence felt like a pallid sequel - a ghost of Oscars past - and not solely because the host had to labor to incorporate nine nominees," Variety magazine commented in their Oscars review.
"Joke all you want, but for a night, anyway, Oscar unabashedly showed its age. And if that represented an improvement over 2011, chalk it up to this ballot grading on a curve."
In a pre-recorded skit that paid tribute to 'Midnight In Paris' Crystal could be seen portraying Sammy Davis Jr in blackface, setting the tone for the rest of the night. He's often played the 'Mr Bojangles' entertainer in Saturday Night Live skits, but his decision to bring it to the Oscars was not welcomed by everyone.
"Octavia Spencer's win shows just how far we've come since Billy Crystal performed in Blackface," comedican Paul Scheer tweeted.
Meanwhile model Coco Rocha wrote: "Ive not smiled once since Billy Crystal started singing yet everyone in the audience is having THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE?! Whats wrong with me?" model Coco Rocha wrote.
