Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has admitted that he has some concerns about characters Mary and Matthew being together after getting engaged in the show’s Christmas special, especially as their difficult relationship was such a viewer draw.
In an interview with The New York Times Julian admitted that the potential lack of tension between the will-they-won’t-they couple, played by Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens, now that they are actually a couple is a "concern".
However, he also reasoned: "But by the same token, shows can also run out of path when they go on with (a will-they-won't-they storyline) too long.
"There is a moment when the audience just thinks, 'Oh, for (goodness') sake'. You somehow have to pre-empt that."

In the same interview Julian defended the difficult storylines for characters Bates and Anna, played by Brendan Coyle and Joanne Froggatt.
Writer Julian explained: "These are two people who have not been given all that much in life, but what they have been given is a real love. I wouldn't ever want to undermine that. But they've got to suffer a little. Nothing (is) harder to dramatise than happiness."
