Shame director Steve McQueen has alleged that Michael Fassbender did not get an Oscar nomination because America is “too scared of sex”.
The Irish actor plays a sex addict in the critically acclaimed film but has not been recognised by the Academy Awards for a lead actor nod ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.
The director told the Press Association: “In America they're too scared of sex, that's why he wasn’t nominated.”
The ‘Haywire’ star’s omission from the list has clearly got the director angered he continued: “If you look at the best actor list you're saying, 'Michael Fassbender's not on that list?' It's kind of crazy, but that’s how it is, it's an American award, let them have it."
The film failed to score any nominations but did manage to scoop Best Actor and Best Film nominations at the BAFTA’s, losing out in both categories to ‘The Artist’.
The ‘Hunger’ actor has been tight lipped about picking up an Oscar nomination. Before the short list was announced he said that being included would be “just a bonus”.

34 year-old Fassbender is clearly not scared of tackling difficult subjects and is currently starring in ‘A Dangerous Method’ as Swiss psychologist Carl Jung alongside Keira Knightley.
The pair have some shocking sex scenes in the movie which left both actors a little red faced.
