Mel Gibson was invited to Whitney Houston’s funeral service in Newark, New Jersey by her family after it was revealed the actor once reached out to the singer while she was struggling to deal with her drug addiction.
According to US Weekly a rep for Houston’s family confirmed that the recovering alcoholic had been invited but was unable to attend due to prior commitments.
A source told TMZ: “Several years ago, when Whitney was about as bad off with drugs and alcohol as she ever was. Mel quietly intervened and spent a lot of time with her, trying to help her break the addiction cycle.”
The family are said to have been "extremely appreciative" of the efforts made by the controversial actor.
The stars have already started to arrive in Newark, New Jersey ahead of Whitney’s funeral tomorrow. (Feb.18)
The late star’s godmother Aretha Franklin is set to perform along with Stevie Wonder. The 48 year-old star was known to have a long battle with drugs.
She was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday afternoon ahead of her planned performance at Clive Davis’ Annual pre-Grammy party.
