TLC's Toddlers and Tiaras is a controversial reality show which follows ambitious mothers and their young daughters as they compete to win child beauty pageants. The show and its stars have come under fire for the children’s revealing costumes, sexual dance moves and painful beauty regimes.
Popular US TV host Anderson Cooper invited four of the most indomitable and infamous pageant moms on Toddlers and Tiaras onto his show to transform them into adult-sized versions of their daughters.
Dressing them in copycat outfits to mimic their daughters' favourite competition costumes, the talk-show host attempted to encourage the mothers to think differently about dressing their young girls up in the skimpy outfits and heavy make-up.
Toddlers and Tiaras star June Shannon was dressed in an uncomfortable embellished pink dress with a corset identical to that of her six-year-old daughter Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo Child, but when asked by Anderson if this has made her think twice about entering her daughter in child beauty pageants, it was clear the embarrassing makeover experience had made no impact:
“I don't rethink any decision that I've made for my daughter as far as pageants. This was all in fun for us today, yeah, the corset is a little tight. With her, she enjoys doing it, so we are going to continue doing it.”
The mother of eight-year-old Laci found the whole ordeal a bit more mortifying as she had to wearing a tiny electric blue Lady Gaga costume with cut out side panels.
The audience agreed with Anderson who said that the revealing Lady Gaga-inspired outfit was “surprising” for such a young child, but she disagreed saying:
“Not at all. I mean, she doesn't have anything, it's different for children, it's not showing anything, it's a swimsuit for her.”
