Christina Hendricks has been voted the world's sexiest woman but as a teenager, her mother would often tell her how "horrible and ugly" she was.
The Mad Men actress, who was in London for the Baftas last weekend, has admitted that while she was growing up she would often dye her hair different colours to stand out from the crowd but that it made her a target for bullies.
Christina, 36, has found fame as Joan Holloway in the hit US show but during school she was "pretty unhappy" because of the bullying.
“My school days were pretty unhappy. I had the worst high school experience ever. I went to a very mean school and was bullied like crazy," she told the Daily Mirror. “I was a bit of a goth with purple hair and I was also part of the drama group, so my friends and I were all weird theatre people and everyone just hated us."
Christina also added: “There was a long corridor with lockers on either side and kids would sit on top of them and spit on you. It was like something out of Lord of the Flies.”
After a move from Tennessee to Virginia as a kid, the actress said it was particularly tough but admits "moving as a teenage is never easy" but her way to stand out was colouring her hair.
But it didn't stop there, she also revealed: “I was a goth kid. I dyed my hair about 42 different colours, shaved it at the back and wore black make-up. Kids can be pretty judgmental about people who are different.
"But instead of breaking down and conforming, I stood firm. That is also probably why I was unhappy. My mother was mortified and kept telling me how horrible and ugly I looked."
She also added: "Strangers would walk by with a look of shock on their face, so I never felt pretty. I just always felt awkward."
Well, look at her now!
