George Clooney is no longer considered the Best Actor frontrunner for the Academy Awards, according to bookmakers.

The star was beaten to the same accolade by Jean Dujardin at last night's BAFTA Awards in Covent Garden, London, despite being ranked behind Clooney and Gary Oldman in most markets.

Today, major bookies including BlueSq, Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and William Hill have slashed the odds on the French star of 'The Artist' achieving the same feat at the Oscars in two weeks' time.

Ladbrokes list odds-on chances of 5/6 for the actor, with Clooney's turn in 'The Descendants' given an even shot of 1/1. Brad Pitt for 'Moneyball', Gary Oldman for 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and Demien Bichir for 'A Better Life' are all considered outsiders.

However, the same can't be said for Meryl Streep in the Best Actress category. Viola Davis has replaced the BAFTA winner as the hot tip, edging slightly ahead of her in most markets.

Whilst 'Iron Lady' star Streep was also handed the Golden Globe trophy, Davis was victorious at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her emotional turn in 'The Help'.

'The Artist' is considered a dead cert to win Best Picture.
