Meryl Streep took home the Best Actress award at last night's Baftas for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

The actress collected the top prize for her film The Iron Lady which charts the rise and fall of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Meryl beat off stiff competition from Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, Tilda Swinton and Berenice Bejuo to take home the prize and despite being the favourite the actress seemed surprised when her name was read out. Previously nominated for 14 Baftas, last night marked only her second win at the British awards.

As she made her way to the stage the actress had a Cinderella moment and lost a shoe. A gallant Colin Firth ran to fetch her footwear whilst the actress exclaimed, “That couldn’t be worse!” when she reached the podium.

After regaining her compsure the 62-year-old paid paid tribute to Thatcher in her speech saying that "somebody once said the fate of the well known is to be misunderstood. The ambition of this film was to look at the life of The Iron Lady from the inside out and locate something real." Watch the moment Meryl loses her shoe here:
