Tony Bennett has called for the legalisation of drugs following the death of Whitney Houston yesterday at the age of 48.
The legendary crooner, sighted the recent string of tragic drug related deaths that have blighted the world of music as the reason behind his controversial opinion.
The 85 year-old, who performed at the Clive Davis pre-Grammy Party at the Beverly Hilton last night only hours after the iconic singer had been found dead addressed the emotional audience.
According to TMZ he said: “First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston. Let's legalize drugs, like Amsterdam, it's a very sane city now."
The crooner performed at the evening which was dedicated to the memory of the singer, who had been scheduled to perform there that night.
Her mentor and producer Clive Davis also addressed the audience and explained why he had not cancelled the event in spite of the tragic circumstances.
He said: "Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage, so many times. So simply put: Whitney would have wanted the music to go on."
Reports have emerged suggesting drugs may have played a part in the stars death with many outlets reporting that prescription pills were discovered in the hotel room where she died.
