Whitney Houston has passed away, aged 48.
A police spokesman confirmed the death of the multi-award winning singer at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles yesterday.
The 48 year-old was found by a member of her security team who immediately contacted the emergency services.
Despite Attempts to save her the singer was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:55pm. While the cause of death is so far unknown, according to the Daily Mail the star had been drinking heavily the night before in the hotel bar.
She had been due to attend her mentor Clive Davies’ pre-Grammy party at the hotel. The event went ahead despite the tragic events althoug the devastate music mogul did not attend himself.
Houston had been working on her big film comeback Sparkle, in which she stars opposite Jordin Sparks. Just earlier TODAY she was linked to a judging role on The X Factor USA.
She will be best remembered for being a pop icon who was a superstar from the middle 80s, with a string if iconic hits including 'I Will Always Love You' and 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'.
She was also a force to be reckoned with at the Box Office, most notably for 'The Bodyguard'.
Her image was plagued by a string of personal troubles in the later stages of her life, though she did make a musical comeback in 2009 with the hit single 'Million Dollar Bill'.
Mariah Carey has written on Twitter: "Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."
Her ex-husband Bobby Brown was said to be devestated upon hearing the news and made a tearful tribute to his wife of 15 years on stage in Mississippi last night.
She will most definitely be missed. What an utter tragedy.
