Billy Connolly has joined the cast of ‘The Hobbit’ playing the role of dwarf warrior Dain Ironfoot.
The comedian was announced as the final addition to the cast of Peter Jackson’s prequel to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series based on the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novel.
"We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself,” Jackson told The Hollywood Reporter.
"With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!"
Connolly joins a stellar line-up of actors reprising their roles in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy including Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis.
Martin Freeman plays the lead role of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins alongside his ‘Sherlock’ co-star Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug the dragon.
The two-part movie is being filmed in New Zealand where it has experienced problems over casting including an industrial dispute over union agreements and police being called to auditions due to safety fears over an overwhelming number of people trying out for the film.
‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, will be released in cinemas on December 14 this year followed by ‘The Hobbit: There And Back Again’ on December 13, 2013.
A teaser trailer has been released for the first film.
We can't wait to see Orlando Bloom back in action...
