Naomi Watts is set to star as Princess Diana in a biopic of the late British icon.
‘The Ring’ star has signed on for Oliver Hirschbiegel's ‘Caught In Flight,’ based on the last two years of the Royal treasure’s life.
Charlize Theron and Carey Mulligan were previously tipped for the role in the movie which begins filming in the UK later this year based on the screenplay by Stephen Jeffery’s.
Watts told The Hollywood Reporter it was "an honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."
The film portrays the Princess of Wales as an international campaigner and humanitarian in the lead up to her fatal car accident in Paris in 1997.
Producers Eccosse Films are promoting the project to buyers in Berlin and former Hanway Films chief executive, Tim Haslam, is handling worldwide sales under his company Embankment Films.
Watts will be seen starring in ‘The Impossible’ opposite Ewan McGregor before taking on the role.
Director Hirschbiegel said Watts was the perfect actress to portray "the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."
