The NFL has apologised to fans for M.I.A’s overzealous performance at Sunday night’s Super Bowl performance.
The British rapper took to the stage to perform with Madonna and Nicki Minaj for the ‘Material Girl’s new single ‘Give Me All Your Lovin’ and almost stole the show when she swore into the camera and dramatically gestured with her middle finger.
According To US Weekly an NFL spokesperson said: “"The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans.”
“We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late."
The 36 year-old rapper allegedly said “I don't give a s***” into the camera, although this was not heard on the live broadcast.
The highly anticipated 12 minute performance received mix reviews from critics but most stars have come out in support for 53 year-old Madonna.
It is not the first time that the Super Bowl half-time show has caused controversy in the United States.
Viewers were outraged eight years ago when Justin Timberlake ripped off Janet Jackson’s top to reveal her pierced nipple.
