Daniel Radcliffe's new film 'The Woman In Black' was narrowly beaten at the US Box Office by rival thriller 'Chronicle' over the weekend.

The Harry Potter star's first high profile role since the wizarding franchise drew to a close last summer raked in $21 million since opening in US cinemas on Friday, just $1 million less than director Josh Trank's chill-fest.

Both films were comfortably ahead of last week's winner 'The Grey', starring Liam Neeson, which dropped to $9.5 million on its second weekend.

Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski's whale movie 'Big Miracle' was the third and final new entry in the country's Top 10, debuting at No. 4 with an $8.5 million intake.

Next weekend the charts look set to be invaded by the 3D re-release of 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace' and Rachel McAdams' latest weepie, 'The Vow', also starring Channing Tatum.

The US Top 10 in full:

1 (-) 'Chronicle' - $22 million
2 (-) 'The Woman in Black' - $21 million
3 (1) 'The Grey' - $9.5 million
4 (-) 'Big Miracle' - $8.5 million
5 (2) 'Underworld: Awakening' - $5.6 million
6 (3) 'One for the Money' - $5.2 million
7 (4) 'Red Tails' - $5 million
8 (8) 'The Descendants' - $4.6 million
