Celebrities including Stephen Fry and Robert Webb have excitedly tweeted the teaser clip of BBC3’s new comedy spoof of hit ITV reality show The Only Way Is Essex.
Based in Wessex and set in the late 19th century, The Only Way Is Wessex is also a lampoon of Victorian poet and novelist Thomas Hardy, with the stars of the show named after famous characters in Hardy’s books, such as Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Bathsheba Everdene.
The parody combines Essex catchphrases with Jane Austen style clothing, as a bonnet-wearing Bathsheba tells Tess: “Babes, you look well pale.”
Tess of the D’Urbervilles explains: “Ah fanks, I’ve just had a spray un-tan at the un-tanning salon.”
Sounding just like their TOWIE counterparts, the girls discuss the hot Mayor of Casterbridge, who “got off his face” and, ahem, sold his girlfriend to a sailor…Which is like “so bang out of order.”
