After hearing that his daughter Amy Winehouse's death could be declared 'illegal', Mitch Winehouse has claimed that he, along with the rest of the family were "very shocked".

Earlier this week it was reported that the coroner, Suzanne Greenaway, who investigated the 'Back To Black' singer's death had resigned in November last year because she did not hold the right qualifications, and if any of the 30 cases that she ran are taken to the High Court - they could be declared 'illegal'.

Now, Mitch Winehouse has told The Sun: "We were very shocked when we were informed that the coroner was not suitably qualified. It's hard to believe her credentials weren't fully checked. You'd assume this sort of thing can't happen."

After her sudden death in July 2011, an inquest was held and it was declared that Amy Winehouse had died from a 'misadventure' after a night of boozing. The family are said to be seeking legal advice but Mitch is confident that her cause of death will remain the same.

"We've been informed the coroner was taking guidance from more experience professionals and the verdict doesn't appear to be in any doubt, but it's upsetting to have to go through all this again," he said. "We just hope that matters can be resolved soon."

Dr Scott Reid, husband of Greenaway and who gave her the job said previously: "In November it became apparent I'd made an error in the appointment process. While I am confident that all of the inquests handled were done so correctly, I apologise if this matter causes distress."
