ITV favourite 'Downton Abbey' beat off 'Doctor Who' for the top drama gong at this year's National Television Awards.

Is anyone really surprised? The show, which follows the lives of the Crawley family and their servants, has found massive success in both the UK and the US, scoring almost obscenely high ratings for 2011's second series.

They've scored Golden Globes and Emmys, but we're willing to bet that scoring the covetable gong on their home turf was the greatest honour yet!

And, with a third and final series promised to hit our screens this Autumn, we're willing to bet that their golden reign over our telly box hasn't quite yet run its course...

Of course, things werent all bad for 'Doctor Who'. Matt Smith picked up Best Male perfromance, while his co-star Karen Gillan scored Best Female.

Karen, who is leaving the show this year, seemed overcome: "Oh my good Lord, this means so much to me!"

Matt Smith has promised to stay on for at least one more series, leaving fans of his quirky and eccentric take on the Doctor completely overjoyed.

Remind yourselves why we love Downton Abbey so much by flicking through these pics of the runaway success story...
