Kate Beckinsale has admitted that the real reason she took the role of Selene in the Underworld movies is because she wanted to shake her "delicate" and nice girl image.
Casting directors had rejected the British actress because they thought that she wouldn't be able to carry off tougher roles in Hollywood and so, she was delighted when the vampire role came up.
For the fourth time, Kate sucked herself into her leather catsuit for the new movie 'Underworld: Awakening', and it topped the US box office this weekend. Before landing the role in 2003, Kate revealed it was hard to get work for strong roles.
"I'd had some feedback from casting directors kind of saying, 'We don't know if we really want to see her for this part, 'cause it's a cop, and she's really very delicate and British and fragile'," she said according to Contactmusic.com.
"And I thought, 'I've got to do something about that. I've got to play something that has a little bit more edge to it'. I love this character (Selene). I really am proud of the fact that I've gotten to play this kind of rather iconic, empowered, empowering woman."
