American Idol ratings are on the skids, if last night's season premiere is anything to go by.

But, with 21 million viewers, it still attracted enough fans to slay its opposition and win the night for network Fox.

The show attracted 26.25 million for its opening episode last year, representing an 18% drop year-on-year. It's even further down on the 2010 premiere, which appealed to 29 million.

US experts reckon the dip may be due to fans of The Voice and The X Factor feeling overwhelmed by the amount of talent shows now on the market.

With X Factor also suffering a similar dip over here, is the talent show concept running out of steam?

American Idol premieres on UK TV on ITV2 tonight at 9pm.

Randy Jackson has said that contestants Under 20 are proving particularly strong this year.

The best Idol contestants ever!

Kelly Clarkson was the first winner of American Idol and the 'Miss Independent' singer has sold an impressive 10.6 million albums. She's undoubtedly been the most successful singer to have been discovered on the show.
