Despite trumping many TV shows during its second series, Downton Abbey failed to make the same impact on Christmas Day, following the news that BBC One soap EastEnders beat the period drama in the ratings battle.

According to the Telegraph, the festive episode, which saw the square's B&B burn down in flames, evil doctor Yusef Khan's death and Phil Mitchell's stalker identified, was seen by 9.9 million viewers.

Downton Abbey, however, only pulled in 8.1 viewers, who saw Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley become engaged.

Speaking about the viewing figures on BBC One, Danny Cohen, said: “I’m delighted that viewers found so much to enjoy on the channel on this special day. We wanted to provide something for everyone.”
