Amongst red-hot newcomers such as Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and One Direction, 2011 has also had its fair share of returning favourites.
Several pop faces, who had been away for a fair while, returned to our ears over the past 12 months, with generally good results.
Steps reformed and instantly sold out arenas nationwide, Jennifer Lopez stepped up to the American Idol judging panel and simultaneously saw her pop career re-ignite, and mid-00s pop-rock favourites Maroon 5 earned one of the biggest hits of their career with the airwave-hogging 'Moves Like Jagger'.
Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay and Britney Spears were back with a bang after a couple of years working on new material, and Blue had another crack of the pop whip with a Eurovision attempt. We've even spared a thought for Joe McElderry, who became the latest in a long line of dumped X Factor winners at the top of 2011, but has since gone on to become the first contestant from the show to score three Gold-selling albums, according to the Official Charts Company.
Oh, and apparently Adele released some music this year, but we didn't really notice...
