Jennifer Hudson has incredibly revealed how a last minute decision managed to save her life, as she decided to head to meet her fiance rather than go home to Chicago where her family were killed that day.
The Oscar-winning singer and actress flew to Florida to watch her fiance David Otunga fight in Tampa on October 24, 2008 when her mother, brother and her seven-year-old nephew Julian King were murdered in their Chicago home.
Hudson, 30, has told Ebony magazine that her decision to watch the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) match, instead of flying home saved her from being killed too.
"That's one of the things that saved my life. Because I could have been home with my mum then. He wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago," she explained.
"I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here," she recalled. "I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now. But I didn't know. He was just like: 'I'm going to this wrestling thing and it's in Tampa. I'm going out there now, so you can come out there and see me versus going home'."
William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julisa, has been charged with the murders of their mother Darnell Donerson, 57, Jason, 29, and seven-year-old Julian.
Hudson also revealed that her brother hadn't been supportive of her decision to marry Otunga.
"My brother had the biggest issue with it," she explained. "He cried. But I'm his baby sister, so of course he was going to have issues with it."
"[The rest of the family] would say: 'Well, Jenny always seems to make the right decisions'. I was being told this for a reason, so [I thought]: 'We're going to take our time.' Obviously, I listened."
Jennifer Hudson recently revealed that she set a date to finally marry Otunga.
