Eddie Murphy has followed Brett Ratner in quitting from hosting the 2012 Oscars.
The 'Tower Heist' star was Ratner's personal choice to take over from James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
However, in the wake of Ratner's controversial homophobic comments, neither he nor the comedy star will be involved in next February's event.
Murphy said in a statement: "First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony.
"I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."
AMPAS president Tom Sherak commented: "I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well."
The search is now on for a new host for the ceremony, with Hugh Jackman, Billy Crystal and The Muppets all being touted as potential replacements.
Looking back at the 2011 Oscars...
