Take That star and new X Factor judge Gary Barlow has claimed that he's still upset by his battle with depression and obesity following the break-up of the boyband.

The Progress singer, who is now below 12st, once weighed 16st 11lb but has now lost the weight because of a healthier lifestyle that includes exercising and eating less.

At his heaviest, Barlow's body mass index was 34.7, which classified him as obese and he said he "felt horrible".

In an interview with the Radio Times, Barlow said: "I felt horrible. I felt s***. For someone so big, I felt incredibly small."

After he was dropped by Sony BMG and his second solo record was far from the success he was used to, the 40-year-old admits that he sunk into depression and turned to food for comfort.

Putting on weight was "about food, obviously, because I was shoving it in my mouth, but it was more about a reaction to who I’d been".

Talking about what he was thinking and why he was turning to food, the new X Factor addition said: " I’d decided, 'OK, nobody wants me, but I don’t want to do it anyway, and to make sure I don’t do it again, this is how I’m going to look'. I realised afterwards it was a form of depression."

Barlow has previously revealed that it was his wife Dawn who asked him to speak to a doctor about his weight gain because his health had been deteriorating.

He'd previously said: "I was wheezy and out of breath with even the slightest exertion. It would take me three rolls to get off the bed and I was reduced to wearing XXXL tracksuits. I hadn't dared stand on the scales, but I forced myself: 16st 8lbs. I booked an appointment."
