Sugababes have revealed the reason why the option to pre-order their new single 'Freedom' has disappeared from music retailers.

Fans have been speculating on social networking sites as to why the song was taken down, with some rumours claiming Jade Ewen was on the verge of quitting, which she denied earlier today.

The girls have now announced that they have abandoned plans to release the track as an official single, and will instead give it away free of charge.

The decision was announced on their official Facebook page, saying "As a thank you to their fans, the Sugababes are offering their new single, 'Freedom' as a free download via Amazon."

It is thought that the move is a result of mainstream radio stations' reluctance to play the song. Stations such as BBC Radio 1 have only played the song once in the last month, according to figures from Compare My Radio.

The news has recieved a mixed reaction from fans, with the band's Facebook followers assuming the move is a last-minute attempt to save face in case the single were to fare poorly in the charts.

"I can't help but feel they did promo for this for what felt like YEARS before the actual single release date," said one fan. "That's the issue there. It loses its lustre by the time the song is released."

Another user added "Can't sell their music so are giving it away for free. So transparent. RIP Sugababes."
