The Oscars are going back to their comedic roots next year, with the announcement of Eddie Murphy as host of the 2012 ceremony.

The funnyman has said he is “enormously honoured” to be fronting the show, which comes six years since his nomination for musical drama Dreamgirls.

The 84th Academy Awards, scheduled for February 26th, will be the first in three years to feature just one host, ending the recent trend of double-acts including Anne Hathaway and James Franco (2011), and Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin (2010).

Brett Ratner, who will produce the show alongside Don Mischer, said Murphy is a “comedic genius; one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever.”

Mischer called him “a truly groundbreaking performer” whose “quick wit and charisma will serve him very well as Oscar host.”

Films already generating awards buzz include Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life and George Clooney’s The Ides of March.
