One Day stars, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess have revealed that their on-screen chemistry was the result of a close friendship developed whilst filming.
Directed by Lone Scherfig, One Day is the on-screen adaptation of David Nicholls' bestselling novel of the same name and looks into the lives of best friends Emma and Dexter on the same day over a period of 20 years. With Hathaway playing Emma and Sturgess as Dexter, the film was well received by critics who praised the cast.
During a press conference prior to the One Day London premiere this week, the actors revealed their chemistry came naturally during filming.
"I was just so lucky me and Anne got on so well... we developed a friendship of our own,"
Sturgess said. The actor explained he and his co-star often hung out, playing music to each other whilst stuck in make-up.
"I came in with a list of chemistry exercises but quickly realised you (Jim) were too cool for
that," Hathaway joked.
The actress also revealed she was nervous to portray Emma Morley in the film and she
prepared herself by watching the British soap Emmerdale.
"David (Nicholls) gives Emma an amazing back story in the book. All I had to do was pay
attention to that, Google a lot and track people down. The largest bit of my research... I just
watched Emmerdale a lot!” she said.
Sturgess on the other hand seemed more relaxed about playing ladies’ man Dexter. “I was more excited to be in a movie people might go and see,” he joked.
David Nicholls, who was also present at the press conference, revealed he found it difficult to
convert his romantic novel into a screenplay. “Some elements of the book wouldn’t work on
screen. It was the hardest screenplay I’ve had to write,” he said.
One Day was released in the UK yesterday.
