With Jennifer Lopez's return to the AI judging panel looking increasingly unlikely, it is thought that Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am is keen for Cheryl to return to US TV and replace her.
A source revealed to Now magazine: "Cheryl Cole's had a lot of offers in America.
"She's also been working really hard on new material for her third album."
As much as we'd love to see Cheryl on American Idol, it appears as though she may have to fend off competition from Shakira and Shania Twain first.
