Matt Cardle ditched his girlfriend to boost his chances on The X Factor, according his ex’s dad.
Cardle ended his four-year relationship with 24-year-old Lauren Cutmore shortly after getting past the initial audition stage.
Now her father is claiming the split was a calculated move by the 27-year-old former painter and decorator to broaden his appeal.
"Matt has been really unfair to Lauren," Mick Cutmore told the Sunday Mirror. "She went along to Matt's first X Factor audition and stood in the queue with him for hours and supported him backstage.
"They even kissed for the cameras after he was voted through to the next round by the judges.
"But then straight afterwards he dumped her. When Lauren asked why, he said the X Factor thought it would be better if he was single.
"They said he would stand a better chance if he wasn't with someone."
Cardle is currently second favourite to win this year’s show, behind Aiden Grimshaw.
