Young lovers Lucia (America Ferrara) and Marcus (Lance Gross) are over the moon when they decide to get engaged. There's just one problem- telling their parents! In addition to differences in background (Lucia is from a Mexican-American family, whereas Marcus' is African-American), the two fathers have unwittingly already clashed over a parking offence. Now Marcus' father, radio DJ Brad (Forrest Whitaker), and Lucia's father Miguel (Carlos Mencia) must find a way to co-exist without coming to blows before the biggest day of their children's lives.

The plot is very familiar (a theme for this week's movies), with a scenario largely based around the clash of of cultures that the wedding throws up. Taking it's cues from comedies like 'Meet The Fockers' and 'Guess Who?', it moves along pleasantly enough without ever really impressing. The comedy arguments between the two fathers come off as a bit false, with both actors almost winking at the camera as they desperately try to milk the laughs.

As previously mentioned, an Oscar is a bit of a mixed blessing. On one hand your career can explode like a certain Miss Jolie after her Oscar for 'Girl, Interrupted', but as Halle Berry will tell you a gold statuette isn't always the key to success. Whitaker has always been a quality actor, but post-'Last King Of Scotland' he hasn't really impressed too much. Why on earth he decided to appear in this is a mystery, and he looks as though he regrets the decision throughout. Mencia comes from a stand-up comedy background, and it's little surprise that race jokes are a big part of his act as that's largely what he relies on here. His performance is lifted a little when he and Whitaker are together but overall he's forgettable. America Ferrara, emerging from her 'Ugly Betty' series with hopes of parlaying that success into big screen stardom, does o.k. and no doubt will appeal to fans of the series to see her emerge from the thick glasses and braces.

An ending that will surprise exactly noone in the audience caps off a comedy that comes and goes without much fuss, and whilst there's little wrong with it there's nothing there that distinguishes it from any other marriage comedy since 'Father Of The Bride'. Hopefully Whitaker made enough money from this to get back to the dramas we loved him for.

Our Family Wedding is released on June 18.
