Summit Entertainment had to hire extra security to protect Rob whilst he filmed Remember Me in New York City.

But Rob has had to keep his team of guards on after almost being squished under the wheels of a car as fans tried to get close to him in New York's Union Square.

An eyewitness told OK!: “If it hadn’t been for the quick-thinking of two members of his team, he could easily have been a goner. “He was pushed off the sidewalk by the sheer number of fans who were trying to get close to him and fell against the door of a moving vehicle.

“If his clothing had got caught or a foot had gone under the car there’s no doubt he would have been dragged along and seriously hurt.”

Eek! The witness told the mag that two member of Rob's team managed to grab his jacket and pull him back onto the kerb.

“Their reactions saved him from injury and afterwards his face was as white as that of his vampire character Edward Cullen.”

Rob has decided it's just too dangerous for him to face his fans in the US without a team around him. We don't blame him, after seeing some of the photos of the crowds, we'd be scared too!
