Robert Pattinson is in talks to appear in a new period drama alongside Reese Witherspoon, according to reports.

The film, entitled Water For Elephants, tells the story of a young orphan who joins a circus freak show as a vet.

Jacob, who would be played by Rob, falls in love with Marlena - the star of the Benzini Brothers' Most Spectacular Show On Earth.

Actor Sean Penn is also understood to be in line to join the cast as an animal trainer.

The screenplay, which is set during the American Depression, has been adapted from a novel by Sarah Gruen, reports Deadline Hollywood.

Rob, who shot to fame as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, recently signed up to star in Bel Ami, which begins shooting in February.

The in-demand actor has also been linked to the role of Spider-Man following the departure of Tobey Maguire.
