Ricky Gervais' performance as host at the 67th Golden Globes has been criticised by the American media.

The British comedian delivered a series of near-the-knuckle remarked, including a joke about Mel Gibson, at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday.

And despite winning praise from various Hollywood stars, his performance failed to achieve similar praise from US critics.

The LA Times newspaper's Mary McNamara said it was "not a great night” for the Office star, while the Hollywood Reporter's said Gervais was “surprisingly uninspired”.

But Gervais proved popular with those in attendance, including Katie Hudson, who said it was “really fun” seeing him on stage.

U2 guitarist The Edge also described his performance as “really cool”.
