MOVIE REVIEW: Toy Story 2 3D (U)

Whether you like it or not, silly glasses will be part of your cinema-going experience more and more from now on. The billion-dollar success that is Avatar, combined with healthy returns for both Ice Age 3 and Monsters Vs Aliens, means 3D is the future, with many predicting the majority of studio releases this year will be in the third dimension, as well as old favourites leaping off the screen. So what will we make of the first really big movie to get ‘made over’ in 3D, 1999’s Toy Story 2?

The dynamic of Andy’s room has changed since the first Toy Story, with Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) now the best of friends and the toy populous quite content. That is until Woody is stolen by an avid toy collector Al, who intends to sell him to a toy museum in Japan along with fellow rare toys Jessie (Joan Cusack) and Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer). Buzz and the gang attempt a daring rescue, but Woody must decide whether it’s better to be preserved for eternity behind glass, or be loved by Andy knowing one day he’ll outgrow him.

It’s perhaps redundant to review this as a ‘new’ film, as the original release of the film was a critical and financial success, but for those new to it all we can say is it is fantastic. Following the superb premise of the film was always going to be difficult, but the wonderful story (co-written by Pete Docter, director of last year’s Up) keeps it fresh and interesting, as well as really funny. The story hasn’t aged very much, quite a feat considering the leaps in technology. Bar the presence of a mobile phone or laptop it could very well be set in present day. But the true icing on the cake of an already great film is the 3D, which integrates so well it will leave you believing the original was filmed with the medium in mind.

The reminder of just how good this and it’s predecessor were will be a double-edged sword - on one hand, the children of today will be introduced to the series, gaining it a whole new following, but on the other hand very few trilogies have produced three equally great instalments (just ask Neo or Shrek), putting more pressure on July’s release of Toy Story 3. But, for the moment, who cares?

Just enjoy this awesome film, either for the first time or all over again, and let it remind you that Pixar are top of the animation tree.

Toy Story 2 3D is released on January 22.
