Robert Pattinson has set the record straight about his much-discussed relationship status.

Rumours the Twilight star is romancing co-star Kristen Stewart went into overdrive in the run-up to the release of New Moon when the pair refused to confirm or deny they are a real-life couple.

"I've been so cryptically avoiding this question throughout the entire interview," he told US chat show David Letterman when asked if they were dating.

But Rob finally gives us an answer in the latest issue of Italian edition of Vanity Fair - he's single!

"I am single," he admits, "...almost everything that came out about my private life is false.

"I think it happens because, really, there is not much to say about what I'm doing.

"While I am filming, I live practically [like a] recluse in [a] hotel. I come out only to work, and sometimes to go out to dinner.

"But, if you read the magazines, it seems that I have a frantic life."

Rob's life certainly looked frantic when he was ambushed by paparazzi when leaving a gig last week.

Pictures of the 23-year-old trying to escape the blaze of flashbulbs prompted some of his fans to campaign against the relentless media coverage of his private life.
