Katie Holmes has claimed she inspired her daughter Suri to wear high heels.

The actress and wife of Tom Cruise has come under fire over recent months after the three-year-old was pictured in the unusual footwear choice.

Among critics of Holmes have been a number of US parent's magazines, which claim the shoes could inhibit Suri's growth.

However, in an interview with Access Hollywood, Holmes defended her daughter's heels and claimed that they were actually supportive.

“She, like every little girl – she loves my high heels,” she said.

“They are actually ballroom dancing shoes for kids. I found them for her and she loves them.”

Holmes, who was speaking at a charity gala in Los Angeles, is currently filming her role in upcoming film The Romantics.
