Kate Winslet has accepted £25,000 damages from the Daily Mail over a story which claimed she had lied about her exercise regime.

The article, entitled 'Should Kate Winslet win an Oscar for the world's most irritating actress?', questioned Winslet's claim that she only exercises for “20 minutes every day at home”.

The Oscar-winning actress had commented on her routine in an interview with Elle Magazine.

The libel damages were agreed at London's High Court today, but Winslet was not present at the hearing.

However, in a statement she said she was “delighted” that the newspaper had “apologised for making false allegations about me".

She added that she felt it was her “responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise”.

The actress, who won an Oscar this year for her role in The Reader, was awarded damages in 2007 in a different case against Grazia magazine.

The publication had suggested the Kate visited a diet doctor.
