Gordon Ramsay has this morning apologised for comments he made about an Australian current affairs presenter.
The TV chef said his remarks about Tracy Grimshaw were “stupid and very careless”, but weren't “meant to hurt in any way”.
Ramsay, who has been widely criticised for the comments made at a cooking master class, said his apology had been prompted by a telephone call from his mother.
“She was disgusted, she wanted to know what actually happened,” he told Channel Nine.
During his presentation at a cooking expo in Melbourne, Ramsay projected a picture of a woman on all fours with a pig's face and said the image reminded him of Grimshaw.
His actions were condemned by Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd, who also accused the chef of being part of “a new form of low life”.
Grimshaw also responded to the comments, describing Ramsay as a "arrogant narcissist".
Ramsay initially played down his remarks, but said today: “I'd just like to take this opportunity to apologise for the stupid comments and am deeply mortified that the whole thing has gone this far.”
He added: "Humble pie is something from this day on I will be eating every day for breakfast.”
Ramsay has developed a reputation for causing controversy.
Last year the chef triggered a parliamentary review of broadcasting guidelines after he swore 80 times during a 40 minute TV show.
