Kelly Osbourne, Pete Wentz, Perez Hilton and Emmy Rossum were among the famous faces in the crowd of demonstrators who took to the streets of Los Angeles to march against the decision not to overturn the ban on gay marriage in California.

On Tuesday the California Supreme Court ruled in favour of Proposition 8, which came into effect late last year - six months after gay marriages were declared legal thanks to a May decision.

However, officials declared those gay couples who wed between May and November last year will still be considered married.

Responding to the latest development, comedienne Ellen DeGeneres - who wed actress girlfriend Portia de Rossi in August 2008 - said: "One day, when everyone is treated with full equality, we’ll look back and realise how wrong this was."

Gay leaders in the state now plan to take their fight to federal court.
