Kiefer Sutherland has said he is “grateful” for the support shown by fans following his recent arrest.

The 24 actor was charged with assault last week after he allegedly head-butted fashion designer Jack McCollough at a club in New York.

Kiefer was apparently provoked after McCollough “bumped into” actress Brooke Shields at an after-party for the Costume Institute Gala.

The actor told Entertainment Tonight that he was unable to discuss the situation, but added: “I've certainly felt a lot of support and I'm grateful for that."

As previously reported on Entertainmentwise, Kiefer's lawyer said earlier this week that he was confident the actor would be cleared because he was "neither the instigator nor the wrongdoer" in the incident.

The actor, who plays Jack Bauer in 24, is currently on probation after spending 48 days in a Californian jail two years ago over a drink driving conviction.

He is due to appear in court on June 22 in connection with the alleged nightclub assault.
